Voices from Haiti
In 2023, Haiti entered one of the most violent and politically unstable periods in its history. The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 left the country in a political vacuum, with gangs gaining significant control over its capital, Port-au-Prince. Gang coalitions, like the G9 led by Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, a former police officer, who I interviewed here, have been involved in extortion, kidnappings, and violent clashes as they expand their territorial and political power.
By 2024, more than 300,000 ordinary people had been displaced due to gang warfare, with many seeking refuge in disused public buildings.
These interviews gather testimonies from displaced people, gangs, political activists, vigilante groups, and religious leaders. Their views on Haiti's future reflect the conflicting perspectives within the country. The situation in Haiti remains critical.
